I recently had the opportunity to share my skills with our community by providing dive lessons to some of the local fishermen in partnership with the North Bali Reef Conservation program. Check out the video below to see the training in action!
North Bali Reef Conservation is an exciting effort dedicated to protecting the coral reef off the coast of Tianyar, a fishing village located just north of Tulamben. Tianyar’s reef has great potential to be a vibrant and thriving ecosystem, but is currently in poor condition due to the impacts of plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing practices. In addition to restoring the health of the reef, this program also aims to develop alternative, sustainable livelihoods for locals.
The goal of this training was to help the fisherman begin to understand some of the skills they will need to become qualified divers. This is the first step towards creating jobs and alternative livelihoods for these fishermen, so that they will be able to generate income from helping to conserve sea life, rather than extracting it.
It was an amazing experience to share my knowledge with these fishermen and help them experience the magic of our underwater world for the first time. I am honored to be part of this conservation journey to help support the health of our island’s underwater environments, as well as the well-being of the people who live here.
I invite you to more about the North Bali Reef Conservation program and hope you will consider supporting this important effort to protect Bali’s marine life and create opportunities within our local communities.
